Dr. Sargent’s Journey from Athlete to Patient
TO DOCTOR OF CHIROPRACTIC MEDICINE
Dr. Sargent was participated in a variety of sports throughout high school, but wrestling was his great passion. He won the PIAA State Wrestling Championship in 1999, then went on to wrestle for four years at Division I Rider University. The rigorous physical demands placed on his body during high-level competition rapidly initiated Dr. Sargent into a deep personal understanding of the human body and the biomechanical function so critical to the technical sport of wrestling. The relentless training during his collegiate athletic career placed excessive biomechanical force on his body and ultimately resulted in two reconstructive shoulder surgeries, the second of which ended his athletic career. After college, he began his studies as a chiropractic student, but also began his journey as a chiropractic patient, hoping to heal his multitude of sports-related injuries. His experience as a patient imbued him with a keen understanding of the burden that is biomechanical pain and decreased function, as well as immense relief as he benefited from corrective chiropractic manipulation with reduced pain and improved function. Dr. Sargent graduated with honors from New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) in 2007. He also graduated with a unique empathy and compassion for his patients, as he had walked in their shoes. Both his professional education in traditional and modern chiropractic techniques and his personal experience of improved quality of life thanks to chiropractic medicine have been vital to his success in the profession.
Dr. Sargent spent the first seven years of his career exclusively working with patients who presented with acute injuries caused by motor vehicle accidents and chronic injuries sustained in work-related injuries. These patients presented a vast array of injuries, not only to the spine, but to shoulders, wrists, hips, knees, ankles, and elbows. This role provided the opportunity to co-manage patient cases with a medical doctor with a specialty in physical and rehabilitative medicine. This experience fostered a nuanced understanding of the potential for collaboration between a chiropractor and a medical doctor to provide holistic and comprehensive care to injured patients. The success and growth of the practice ultimately led to opening two additional locations that specialized in work-related and motor vehicle accident-related patient care. The sheer quantity of non-spinal conditions that Dr. Sargent had the opportunity to treat over those seven years provided him with a vast experience that would typically take several decades to amass. Dr. Sargent was able to hone his expert techniques tailored to non-spinal injuries of shoulders, wrists, hips, and knees, and particularly to the pervasive condition of headaches.
Looking to gain experience in the commercial insurance sector of chiropractic care, Dr. Sargent next joined an Integrated Health Care practice. During his years at this practice, Dr. Sargent worked alongside and benefited from the tutelage of excellent Chiropractors, Physical Therapists, Massage Therapists, and Physical Therapy Assistants. Yet again in his career, Dr. Sargent’s openness and willingness to learn from other healthcare professionals garnered him a new wealth and breadth of understanding about how to heal the human body. The founder of this integrated practice, Dr. Paul Hetrick, invented an underwater treadmill system (now a global product), to provide both mobilization therapy and stabilization therapy in a controlled environment at the same time.
The years of athletic training and competition coupled with overuse and excessive biomechanical strain of his manual duties as a chiropractor resulted in a serious back injury for Dr. Sargent. The neurologic compromise from the back injury did not respond to chiropractic or medical management, and he underwent two low-back surgical procedures to prevent permanent neurologic damage. Dr. Sargent can attest that his experience as the patient has forever shaped his understanding as the healer. His injuries and subsequent medical experiences taught him that not all conditions are resolvable, but all can be managed. Realistic functional outcomes can be achieved by managing mobility and stability within the anatomical structures. A practitioner possessing the experience of a patient is always reminded of the ebbs and flows of symptoms and remains in touch with what the true goal of care is…the improved ability to move, function and improve your quality of life.
At JMR Mobility, Dr. Sargent’s unique background and vast experience meld to create a perfect opportunity for him to customize a manual therapy mobilization program for each individual patient and aggressively pursue their goals to attain the stabilization required for optimum mobilization and functional endurance. This translates directly into improved daily functioning and quality of life for you.

Dr. Sargent’s Journey from Athlete to Patient to Doctor of Chiropractic
Dr. Sargent was very involved with a variety of sports throughout high school, but wrestling was the primary sport. He won the PIAA State Wrestling Championship in 1999 and wrestled 4 years for a Division 1 wrestling program. As an athlete, particularly as a wrestler in the State of Pennsylvania, initiated Dr. Sargent’s understanding of the human body and the biomechanical involvement of the body that are so critical to the technical and training aspects in the sport of wrestling. The training required for his collegiate athletic career provided a prolonged excess of biomechanical forces throughout his body, and ultimately resulted in two reconstructive shoulder surgeries, the second of which ended his athletic career. After college, he began studies as a chiropractic student, but also began as a chiropractic patient, courtesy of the multiple sports related injuries. Dr. Sargent graduated with honors from New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) in 2007. Throughout his time at NYCC, he had the opportunity to learn the language and techniques of both the older chiropractic approach and the more modern approach often used today. Both have been vital to success in the profession.
