About Dr. Leonard (PJ) Sargent Jr
Dr. Sargent’s Journey from Athlete to Patient to Doctor of Chiropractic
Dr. Sargent was very involved with a variety of sports throughout high school, but wrestling was the primary sport. He won the PIAA State Wrestling Championship in 1999 and wrestled 4 years for a Division 1 wrestling program. As an athlete, particularly as a wrestler in the State of Pennsylvania, initiated Dr. Sargent’s understanding of the human body and the biomechanical involvement of the body that are so critical to the technical and training aspects in the sport of wrestling. The training required for his collegiate athletic career provided a prolonged excess of biomechanical forces throughout his body, and ultimately resulted in two reconstructive shoulder surgeries, the second of which ended his athletic career. After college, he began studies as a chiropractic student, but also began as a chiropractic patient, courtesy of the multiple sports related injuries. Dr. Sargent graduated with honors from New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) in 2007. Throughout his time at NYCC, he had the opportunity to learn the language and techniques of both the older chiropractic approach and the more modern approach often used today. Both have been vital to success in the profession.
Dr. Sargent spent the first seven years of his career exclusively working with patients that presented with either acute injuries caused in motor vehicle accidents or more chronic injuries sustained in work related injuries. Every patient had a varying degree of injuries, not only to the spine, but to shoulders, wrists, hips, knees, ankles, and elbows. This role provided the opportunity to co-manage the patient’s cases with a medical doctor with a specialty in physical and rehabilitative medicine. This experience fostered a deep understanding of the professional case management between a chiropractor and a medical doctor. The success and growth of the practice ultimately led to opening two additional locations that specialized in work-related and motor vehicle accident-related injured patient care. The quantity of non-spinal conditions that Dr. Sargent had the opportunity to treat over those seven years provided him with a unique experience that would typically take several decades to establish. Dr. Sargent was able to develop sub-specialties within the treatment program tailored to non-spinal injuries of shoulders, wrists, hips, and knees, and with the ever-problematic condition of headaches.
Looking to gain experience in the commercial insurance side of chiropractic care, Dr. Sargent joined an Integrated Health Care practice. During his years at this practice, Dr. Sargent worked alongside and was able to witness and absorb the techniques of excellent Chiropractors, Physical Therapists, Massage Therapists, and Physical Therapy Assistants. The founder of this integrated practice, Dr. Paul Hetrick, invented an underwater treadmill system (now a global product), to provide both mobilization therapy and stabilization therapy in a controlled environment at the same time.
The years of athletic training, competition and strain coupled with the overuse and excessive biomechanical strain from the manual duties as a Chiropractor resulted in a serious back injury for Dr. Sargent. The neurologic compromise from the back injury did not respond to chiropractic or medical management and the end result was two separate low back surgical procedures to prevent permanent neurologic damage. Dr. Sargent can attest that his understanding as the patient has forever shaped his understanding as the Physician. His experiences taught him that not all conditions are resolvable, but all can be managed. Realistic functional outcomes can be achieved by managing mobility and stability within the anatomical structures. A Practitioner practicing as a patient is always reminded of the ebbs and flows of symptoms and remains in touch with what the true goal of care is…the ability to move and to function.
At JMR Mobility, Dr. Sargent’s background and experience has created an opportunity for him to customize a manual therapy mobilization program for each individual patient and allow for them to then attain the stabilization required for optimum mobilization and functional endurance.
